The unexpected journey

I was an Education major at UD when I first came in contact with sales as a career.
I definitely was not looking for the job, it found me.
My mom had a friend who worked at a local credit card company in town, and she got me an interview.
It was the WORST kind of sales job - Outbound Telemarketing. Uggh.
But, the hours worked around my school schedule and I needed the money.
I was so bad at it the first 3 months they were going to fire me.
Then, one night I went in and magic happened.
I was sick as a dog and you could hear it in my voice.
I sold more that night than I ever sold.
On my drive home I asked myself "Why?"
I wasn't saying anything different.
Then it dawned on me.
It was the way I sounded.
Instead of being all chirpy and energetic, I was kind of flat and monotone.
I needed to calm the heck down.
It actually felt good to suddenly be good at something I was failing at.
I went to the library to learn more techniques to keep being good at it.
I read books about hypnosis. I even read a book about how Opera singers control their diaphragm to sing.
It worked, I went on to become the #1 Salesperson in the country.
For the first time, I was the best at something, and it was exhilarating.
It changed the course of my life.
This company that was going to fire me offered me a job as a Sales Trainer so I could teach others how to do what I did.
I've never looked back.
What I've learned about life over the years is when an opportunity presents itself, you need to take it.
It's true. I never wanted to go into sales.
Decades later I'm writing this blog, encouraging you to think about it.
